Hold Your Snail Mail While Traveling

Hey, it’s Chad Kimball here, and I’m showing you a Google search for USPS Hold Mail Service. If you’re in the U. S., I highly recommend that you do this if you are leaving for any period of time. If you have the Internet lifestyle, this should be your goal. I believe you travel and go where you want and spend some extended time away, but you do need to do something about your mail.

Now, previously in my chadinwyoming.com blog, I talked about having your mail forwarded, which if you just do a Google search for USPS Forward Mail Service, they’ll do that as well. They’ll actually forward your mail to any address where you are. That’s a great option if you’re going to be gone. When I recorded that video, we were in Wyoming for three months – actually, a little bit longer than three months. Since I really did need to see my mail, I didn’t just want it to be held.

But in this case, I’ve dealt with all the urgent business. I don’t think I’ll be receiving any urgent mail that I need to receive all the way out here. As we’re traveling, we’re out west in the western United States. I don’t really need my mail delivered, I just don’t want it to fill up my mailbox and over flow. So what you can do is, just do a search for USPS Hold Mail Service. By the way, if you are somewhere else in the world and you know that your specific mail service provides this, could you post a link to it? I’d love to have a little repository of links from folks all over the world where they could do this as they’re traveling and run their business from abroad. So you just click on that, the Hold Mail Service link, and it leads you to a page. It looks something like this.

All you have to do is fill out your name and address, which I’m going to do right now. I’m not going to make you sit and watch it, so I’m going to pause the video for a second. And then once you’ve filled it out, then this check availability button will appear, and that will let you know if your specific zip code has this service available, because not all zip codes do. And boom, it shows me that mine is available. Oh, here we go: here’s the link down here to the premium forwarding service, if you’re interested in that. If you’re going to be gone longer than 30 days and you really do need access to your mail, you can actually have it forwarded to wherever you are, which is another great option.

So then, down here, you just select your start date. Starting at 2:00 a.m. on any day, they can start on that day. So my start date is the 8th. I’m going to choose the 18th for my end date because that’s probably the last – I mean, we could get back earlier than that, but we definitely won’t be gone longer than that – so I’m going to choose the 18th. So that will be about a ten-day stretch there where they are going to hold my mail. And then I’m going to click save dates. Then you choose the option that you pick it up at the post office when you get back, or you can just have the carrier deliver the accumulated mail. That’s what I’m going to have them do: just deliver all my mail so I’ll have a huge box of mail on the 18th there, delivered to my house. And then you just click submit, and that’s it. And there you go: your hold mail has been scheduled. And the nice thing about this is then you don’t have to worry about someone coming to your house every day and collecting it for you.

I’ve tried a lot of different options as we’ve traveled around and I’ve run my business from various locations, and it’s always difficult. I’ve just had problems with people missing a bill or stuff getting misplaced and lost. This is a great option because you know none of the mail is going to go anywhere. You don’t even have to worry about exchanging hands or getting lost in any way, and it’s all there for you when you get back. So definitely get this set up if you’re going to be gone more than just a couple of days. You don’t want that signal to burglars that you’re not there. If you see your mail is piling up and overflowing out of your mailbox, you definitely don’t want to show that to the folks that are eyeing your house as a possible burglary target. So yeah, hopefully that was helpful for you folks that are living the Internet lifestyle and traveling around the world.
